Shizuoka Begins Studying Offshore Wind Power and Wave Power Generation

Keywords: Local government Renewable Energy

Shizuoka Prefecture has established a study council for the introduction of renewable energies at Omaezaki Port and held its first meeting on August 6, 2013. Considering impact on safe operation of sea vessels and fishing activities by introducing renewable energy facilities at ports and harbors, the council aims to smooth the introduction of such facilities at Omaezaki Port.

With the aim of establishing a sustainable energy system, the prefecture drew up the "Suruga Bay Ports Action Plan" in March, 2011 to promote port measures. Treating the three major ports (Shimizu Port, Tagonoura Port and Omaezaki Port) in Suruga Bay as "Suruga Bay Ports," the Plan promotes integrated use of the three ports by developing role-sharing and mutually complementary relationships.

In March 2013, the third meeting of the advisory panel for advancing the "Suruga Bay Ports Action Plan" was held. As one of the promotions to utilize renewable energies at ports and harbors, they discussed the creation of a renewable energy zone for wind power and wave power generation systems offshore of the front breakwater of Omaezaki Port.
