METI Announces Green IT Awards 2009 Winners

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced winners of the Green IT Awards 2009 on October 5, 2009. The awards were established in FY2008 to further accelerate efforts for green IT initiatives centered on "savings in IT-related energy consumption" and "energy conservation through the use of IT." Similar to the previous year, there were twelve awards given, six each in each of the above two categories. (See the related JFS article below).

Green Data Center ○R Service of NTT Data Corp. and NTT Facilities, Inc. was one of the winners of the METI Minister Award for savings in IT-related energy consumption. By introducing leading edge technologies including DC power supply units throughout the process, the services are estimated to reduce electricity consumption approximately 30 percent compared to conventional methods. The other winners for this category were ALAXALA Networks Co., Toshiba Corp, Hitachi Ltd, Fujitsu Ltd, and AMD Japan Ltd.

The METI Minister Award for energy conservation through the use of IT went to the "IT usage leading to zero energy waste in production lines" of Yokogawa Electric Corp. With the integration of production and energy information, the company has made energy usage visible for each production line and product , allowing all employees to participate in energy-saving activities via website. Other winners for this category were Suzuyo & Co. / Fujitsu Ltd, Kojima Press Industry Co., NEC Biglobe Ltd., Green UT Project, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Co. / NEC Corp. / Oki Electric Industry Co.
