Matsushita's Factory Energy-Efficiency Project Accredited as CDM

Keywords: Energy Conservation Manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. announced on March 7, 2007, that its energy-efficiency improvement plan at factory sites was accredited and registered as CDM project activities by the Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM EB) of the United Nations on March 3. The company began implementing the plan at 10 factories in Malaysia in 2004. The plan will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8,100 tons per year over next ten years. It is the first time that a plan to improve energy-efficiency at Japanese factory sites was accredited as a CDM project activity.

Matsushita obtained Japanese government approval on February 2, 2006, for the plan to introduce energy saving measures such as upgrade of compressors and boilers, and renewal of capital equipment to more energy-efficient technology, into factories manufacturing home electric appliances and components in Malaysia in order to promote reductions in power and natural gas consumption. Approval by the host country and verification by operational entities designated by the CDM EB were required prior to the CDM accreditation.

Matsushita has been engaged in creating and implementing its own scheme for energy saving measures with the aim of developing a CDM project activity using this scheme. The accreditation from the CDM EB allows Matsushita to expand the scheme to its other factories, thereby contributing to greater reductions in CO2 emissions. The company plans to expand a similar project in China, in fiscal 2007.
