Electric Power Output Control System Developed for Residential Complex

Keywords: Energy Conservation Environmental Technology Manufacturing industry Non-manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd., and Tokyo Electric Power Co. have codeveloped an electric power consumption control system, dubbed the "Kansen Power-Navi System," to prevent electricity overload in residential complexes. The system realizes multiple electric renovations within residential units, for example, installation of electric appliances such as induction cookers and air conditioners, without affecting the main wiring shared by other residential complex units. Both companies will begin discussing the proposal in April 2007, and the system is scheduled to be released by Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd., in October.

The newly developed system simultaneously monitors both the electric load of the main wiring shared in the residential complex and individual residential electrical load. When the system monitors and projects that the total electricity load of an individual unit will exceed the capacity of the complex's wiring, the system automatically shuts down electric appliances in the houses according to a preset priority order based on individual excess overload. Thus, it controls the entire complex's use of electricity. The system also automatically shuts off home appliances when individual home electric usage nears the contract capacity, in order to prevent breaker shut-down.

With this system, the renovation of main wiring in community complexes is no longer required. The low speed power line communication method (using domestic power lines as communication circuit) is used to transmit control data, without having to install transmitting lines to individual homes, thus application cost and construction period can be drastically diminished.
