Oki Electric to Cut 3,300 Tons of CO2 Emissions through Server Consolidation

Keywords: Climate Change Energy Conservation Manufacturing industry

Oki Electric Industry Co. of Japan has announced that it will reorganize systems within the company and halve the number of its current 3,400 office servers by April 2006, in order to reduce power consumption as part of its effort to protect the environment. In doing so, the company expects to reduce annual electricity consumption by 7.5 million kWh, which translates into 3,300 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 130 million yen (about U.S. $ 1.2 million) in electricity fees.

Because they are used as databases, servers use electricity 24 hours a day. In addition, rooms where servers are located need to be kept at a constant temperature throughout the year to ensure stable performance. Thus, improving the power consumption efficiency of servers is a major issue in terms of carbon dioxide emission reduction.

Oki has drawn up plans to reorganize and integrate its systems after reviewing how each division's server is actually used and coordinating server use among divisions. The company will implement the plans starting in 2004 and halve the number of its servers by 2006. Oki plans to use new power-saving models for integrated servers to further reduce the burden on the environment.
