MOE Works Out Scenarios for Anti-Global Warming Technologies

Japan's Ministry of the Environment (MOE), has set up a Panel on Core Technological Measures Against Global Warming to assist the transport and non-industrial sectors of the economy, which need to take prompt action against global warming. The MOE has drawn up scenarios involving six practical core technologies, the selection and promotion of which would allow achievement of carbon dioxide emission reduction targets pledged under the Kyoto Protocol.

These six technological measures are:

1. Low-concentration bioethanol/gasoline mixtures: gasoline blended with a low concentration of bioethanol

2. Bioethanol for business use: bioethanol blended with kerosene or heavy oil to be burned in boilers

3. Voltage control systems for residential use: installation of an auto-tuner that adjusts voltages higher than 100 volts down to 100 volts, as an energy conservation measure.

4. Ultra-low sulfur diesel: substantial curtailing of sulfur in diesel fuel to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve the rate of fuel consumption.

5. Household wind power generating systems: small-scale, noiseless 1-kilowatt wind power generators for non-industrial use that can generate electricity in urban areas with an average wind speed of two to three meters per second

6. Widespread use of household photovoltaic power generating systems.

The Ministry plans to act steadily and positively in introducing and promoting these technologies in accordance with the scenarios in its report.
