Number of Companies Implementing Power-Saving Measures Growing Nationwide

Teikoku Databank, a credit research company, announced on July 4, 2012, the results of its survey on corporate attitudes toward reduction of power consumption in the summer. The target sample size was 22,800 companies nationwide, out of which the number of valid responses was 10,589 (response rate of 46.4%). Over 70% of the companies nationwide reported they had implemented power-saving measures. The most common answer on reducing power consumption was "by less than 10%," given by 40.3% of respondents.

In the South Kanto region, where planned power outages took place in 2011, 78.4% of the companies (2,739 companies) said they had implemented power-saving measures. The most common answer on reducing power consumption among the 10 regions was "by 10% or more," given by 28.3% (990 companies) of respondents. In the target areas of Kinki and Kyushu, serviced by Kansai Electric Power Co. and Kyushu Electric Power Co., where the Japanese government has set a numerical goal of 10%, the results were 20.6% (364 companies) and 16.2% (140 companies), respectively.

Among those companies that said they "will implement (including planning and considering to)" power-saving measures this summer, 92.5% of the companies replied, "will adjust temperature of air conditioning," 38.0% replied, "will install products and equipment that consume less power (such as LEDs)," which increased by 6.1 points from fiscal year 2011, and 11.0% replied, "will shorten working and business hours."
