Tokyo Advocates Smart Power Saving with New Energy Management Promotion Policy

Keywords: Energy Conservation Local government

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) announced on May 14, 2012, that it has formulated a policy for promoting energy conservation and management, titled "Toward a Smart Energy City Beyond Power-Saving" (unofficial translation). In addition to intelligent energy conservation measures that will be needed on a continuous basis from summer 2012, the policy also lays out a strategy to make Tokyo a smart energy city of the future.

Reflecting the power demand-supply outlook for summer 2012, TMG points out in the policy that smart energy conservation based on past experience will be the foundation for all energy conservation activities going forward. TMG has presented three basic policies for smart electricity conservation, one of which is the promotion of sustainable energy-saving measures that eliminate waste and are easy to implement. The policy also includes seven-point guidelines for businesses and households to follow, including the use of lights with less than a 500-lux lighting intensity, prevention of wasteful use of lighting, and reviewing workplace illuminance (businesses); and using a "medium" temperature setting for refrigerators (households).

Building on smart electricity conservation measures, the policy also describes initiatives for creating a smart energy city that simultaneously realizes lower carbon emissions, greater comfort, and increased resilience to disasters.
