On February 1, 2012, Kitakyushu City and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., a major Japanese chemical products company, completed installation of a thin-film photovoltaic (PV) system on Kitakyushu City Hall. The system has two types: role-screen type and integrated aluminum substrate board type. The roll-screen type is the first practical application of a thin-film PV system in Japan on a structure other than research facilities and factories. The city and Mitsubishi Chemical will verify the system's resistance and durability as well as its output performance.

The city was selected as a future city for the Future City Initiative set forth by the Japanese Cabinet Office in December 2011. The recent installation of a thin-film PV system is part of the city's effort to make the city hall worth the title. The integrated aluminum substrate board type consists of a 0.99 kilowatt module on the south entrance canopy, and the role-screen type consists of a 0.74 kilowatt module on the window of a fifth floor presentation room, both of which will power LED lighting and other appliances in the building.

The city intends to further disseminate and promote PV systems on walls and windows where it has been considered difficult to install such systems.
