Yano Research Institute Ltd., a Japanese marketing research company, announced on December 12, 2011, the results of its lighting industry market study. According to the company, the demand for light-emitting diode (LED) lighting for general lighting use has grown dramatically as a result of the growing need for energy and power conservation, which has spurred the market growth. The survey was carried out from September through November 2011, targeting companies in the lighting market, electrical material wholesalers, and relevant organizations through face-to-face interviews, telephone questionnaires, and document research.

The study shows that sales in the LED lighting market for general lighting use will grow from 75 billion yen (about U.S.$974 million) in 2010 to 139.3 billion yen (about $1.8 billion) in 2011, an increase of 85.7 percent. (The growth from 2009 to 2010 was 100.5 percent.) The growth can be attributed to the large switchover to high-efficiency lighting systems, mainly LED lighting, at offices, factories, and commercial buildings due to the amendment of the Energy Conservation Law, as well as in ordinary households after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

The LED lighting business expected to improve manufacturers' performance from 2010 to 2011, contributing to obtain good results for those that shifted their core business from traditional lighting to LED lighting.
