NTT Starts Trial of Home Power Visualization Service

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Energy Conservation Non-manufacturing industry

NTT East Co., Japan's largest telecommunication service provider, on July 1, 2011, began offering a trial service for visualizing information on home power consumption and power supply. This service is intended to support household power-saving efforts and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

For this service, a special device installed at the customer's house measures the power consumption of the household overall, and the consumption of each electric appliance. The customer can check the measured data displayed on Hikari i-frame, NTT's information terminal, or on his/her own personal computer using a web browser. Also displayed is power supply information provided by Tokyo and Tohoku Electric Power Companies, including total power consumption, power supply capacity, and power usage rate against supply, as well as power conservation tips.

Displaying information on power consumption and supply, Hikari i-frame can be used as a smart controller that enables energy control. The company plans to further promote energy control using information and communications technology (ICT) at its customers' homes by incorporating information on energy generation and storage including solar power generation, batteries and electric vehicles, as well as by cooperating with the related ministries and agencies. This will help create ICT homes.
