Hirakawa Co., a Japanese bedding and apparel manufacturer, started on April 17, 2011, its 2011 sales of Cool Gelmat, Cool Gelscarf, and Cool Towel. According to the company, these products provide users with a natural cool feeling using only water and no electricity, helping people in Japan stay positive while trying to save energy.

The company has been selling a summer season Cool Gelmat, a cool mattress that contains gel, since 2008, and Cool Gelscarf, which utilizes the evaporative cooling phenomenon, since 2010. In 2011, the company added a washable feature to Cool Gelmat. For Cool Gelscarf, it has also adopted a high-function texture, Bulky Dry, to give it a dry touch. The company has also launched a new item, Cool Towel, which is highly absorbent and becomes cold to the touch simply by soaking it in water.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, the company conducted an online survey on electricity conservation targeting 500 married people living in the Tokyo Electricity Power Company's service area. The results showed that almost all respondents are trying to conserve electricity. In particular, more than half of female respondents answered that they trying very hard to conserve electricity. The survey also revealed that people had a tendency to regard electricity conservation in a positive light.

The company hopes to continue actively developing and adding new products with the aim to be a strong supporter of lifestyles that conserve energy.
