Joint Statement by Private Companies to Promote Introduction of FCVs into Japanese Market

Thirteen private Japanese companies, consisting of auto manufacturers and hydrogen suppliers, issued on January 13, 2011, a joint statement regarding their plans for development of hydrogen supply infrastructure, and for the introduction of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) into the Japanese commercial market in 2015.

According to the statement, the auto manufacturers, which are taking drastic cost-cutting measures for fuel cell systems through technical development, aim to introduce FCVs into the domestic market and release them for general use in 2015, primarily in four major urban areas (Tokyo, Chukyo, Kansai and Fukuoka). Ahead of the debut of FCVs, hydrogen suppliers, including Tokyo Gas Co., will aim to establish a primary market for mass-produced FCVs. The suppliers intend to install about 100 hydrogen stations by 2015, in accordance with FCV sales forecast.

The auto manufacturers and the hydrogen suppliers jointly intend to take measures to promote the nationwide use of FCVs and to improve infrastructure for hydrogen stations, thereby reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the transportation sector.

The companies plan to suggest that the Japanese government establish an FCV dissemination strategy, such as FCV promotion support and improvement of social receptivity, jointly with private sectors. With regard to specific measures, they intend to start discussions on strategies with related parties, including local governments.
