Kao Named Top Company for Reporting on its Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Climate Change Initiatives

Kao Corp., a leading manufacturer of chemical products, was named by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) on October 18, 2010, as the top reporting company regarding its strategies for dealing with greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, after CDP's annual survey of the top 500 largest Japanese companies in terms of market capitalization.

The CDP, a non-profit organization based in London, UK, has the world's largest database of company strategies to address climate change. Every year, it sends a questionnaire on climate change initiatives to companies with large market capitalization. After analyzing and evaluating the responses, it reports the results to the public. By doing so, it aims to promote dialogue among investors, companies, and governments.

Kao has responded to the questionnaires since the CDP started the survey in 2003, and was listed on the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index in 2008 and 2009 as the most advanced company in Japan regarding information disclosure. They have received the highest score for the best company in this category, together with Panasonic Corporation and Taisei Corporation.

Kao announced its "Kao Environment Statement" in June 2009, which includes a commitment as one of its mid-term goals for 2020 to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions in the overall lifecycle of its products by 35 percent from the 2005 level. Through promotion of the "CDP Supply Chain Project," in which it has participated since 2009, Kao intends to foster better understanding of global warming risks and opportunities with suppliers.
