Kao Starts Purchasing Certified Sustainable Palm Oil

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Ecosystems / Biodiversity Manufacturing industry

Kao Corp., a major Japanese household products manufacturer, started purchasing certified palm oil in September 2010. The palm oil is produced in accordance with specified methods of plantations certified under the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The plantations issue certification credits in proportion to the amount of the oil registered and users buy them through the credits, which is validated by "Book and Claim System" to cover the producer's costs of maintaining the certification and to supply funds for RSPO activities.

RSPO was established in 2004 by the world's leading environmental non-profit organizations and producers/users of the palm oil. It aims to preserve the natural environment of Malaysia and Indonesia, where palm oil is produced, as well as to promote the production and utilization of sustainable palm oil while respecting the rights of people in local communities.

Kao has been a member of RSPO since 2007 and is in a position to promote the preservation of bio-diversity because it uses palm oil and palm kernel oil as key materials for toiletry and chemical products. The company has been purchasing all of its palm oil and palm kernel oil from RSPO member producers, aiming to use only certified oils by 2015 as long as it can secure a sufficient amount.
