Tohoku Electric Power to Construct Large Solar Power Generation Facilities

The president of Tohoku Electric Power Co. made an announcement at a press conference on February 26, 2009, that the company plans to construct two large solar power generation facilities--a 1.5-megawatt project at the Hachinohe Thermal Power Station site in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, and a 2-megawatt project at the Sendai Thermal Power Station site in Shichigahama, Miyagi Prefecture--as part of its initiative to help create a low carbon society. The construction is expected to begin in fiscal 2010 for both facilities to go online in fiscal 2012.

The annual output by these facilities will be approximately 3.7 million kilowatt hours, enough to power about 1,100 ordinary homes and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about 1,800 tons per year. The company plans to build additional large-scale solar power facilities for a total capacity of 10 megawatts within its business area by fiscal 2020. Once completed, the total reduction of CO2 emissions is expected to reach 5,000 tons per year.

In addition, Tohoku Electric Power plans to introduce around 1,000 plug-in hybrid cars and electric cars for business use by 2020. This will create estimated reductions of CO2 emissions of 1,000 tons per year.
