Fuji Electronics Co. Expands Production Capacity for Amorphous Solar Batteries

Fuji Electronic Systems Co. (FES), a systems manufacturer, announced on October 4, 2007, that it will expand its production capacity for F WAVE, a film-type amorphous solar battery, by 3.3 times from current levels (12 MW per year) to 40 MW in the first half of fiscal 2008. This will require capital investment of about 7 billion yen (U.S.$ 60.3 million).

F WAVE is a silicon-saving solar battery with three major features. It is thin, light and flexible, and is capable of generating electricity with a small amount of light. In addition, its production method allows for cutting CO2 emissions by 50 percent when compared to crystalline solar batteries. FES will market this product primarily for building rooftop use, for example, in large rooftops and water-proof sheet integrated-type rooftops.

The company has decided to expand the production capacity because of an expected 30 percent increase in the solar battery market, mainly in Europe, and because of inquiries for large-scale transactions from countries like Germany. While carefully watching market and technology trends, FES will attempt to pump approximately 30 billion yen (U.S.$ 258 million) into research and capital investment to produce 150 MW annually within a few years.
