2007 Summer Catalog of Energy Efficient Home Appliances Issued

Keywords: Energy Conservation Environmental Technology Non-manufacturing industry

The Energy Conservation Center Japan (ECCJ) issued the summer 2007 version of its energy conservation performance catalog for home appliances on June 11, 2007. The catalog, commissioned by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, provides rankings for energy-saving home appliances in terms of energy efficiency (e.g. annual electricity consumption).

The catalog includes about 1,400 models in seven product categories, including air conditioners, televisions (cathode-ray tube, liquid crystal and plasma), refrigerators, fluorescent light fixtures and electronic bidet toilet seats, in addition to electric rice cookers and microwave ovens, that were subsequently covered by the "Energy-Saving Labeling System" in February 2007. It also provides rankings for energy-saving home appliances in order of energy efficiency.

The information on air conditioners, televisions and refrigerators includes the national standard energy-saving label, which indicates energy conservation evaluated on a five-point scale. In addition, other energy-saving performance information, such as estimated annual electricity expense, is also published in order to help consumers select energy-saving home appliances.

The catalog provides useful tips on how to select and use information on appliance performance, basic knowledge about the products and ways to enhance their energy-saving effects. An online version of the catalog is also available on the ECCJ website (in Japanese only).
