End of Too-Warm Office in Winter, Kao Cuts 11.5 tons of CO2 Emissions

Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry

In response to the "Team Minus 6 Percent" campaign of the Japanese Ministry of the Environment, Kao Corporation, a major manufacturer of personal care and cleaning products, and specialty chemicals, joined the energy saving effort to set office temperatures at 20 degrees Celsius in winter from November 2005 to February 2006. As a result, the electricity used in its offices was reduced by 43,000kWh (equivalent to 8.8 kiloliters of crude oil or 11.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions) as compared with the same period during the previous year.

In support of the anti-global warming movement, Kao continues its participation in the campaign for summer. It keeps office air conditioners set at 28 degrees Celsius and encourages employees to take part in "Cool Biz", a fashion for businesswear that encourages workers to wear no tie or jacket.
