Solar/Wind Energy Used to Light Phone Booths

Keywords: Climate Change Non-manufacturing industry Policy / Systems Renewable Energy

The Hokkaido branch of the NTT East Corp. has installed a hybrid solar/wind power system to start supplying clean energy to a self-generated lighting system and at two existing public phone booths – the system also serves as a streetlight. A lighting ceremony was held on February 1, 2005 at a phone booth in Sapporo, prefectural capital of Hokkaido.

By storing power from solar and wind energy in a battery, the system can keep supplying power for five days without sunshine. Introducing this system is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) by about 55 kilograms annually.

The Hokkaido branch of the NTT East Corp. acquired ISO14001 certification in November 2003. It undertakes environmental conservation activities to reduce CO2 emissions as a measure to curb global warming under a company environmental policy for providing eco-friendly systems and services that promote energy conservation and effective use of resources in the communication industry.
