The Chubu Electric Power Group in Japan announced a new Environmental Statement on April 8, 2004, a revised version of the Chubu Electric Power Environmental Statement 21 issued in 2000. The statement was amended to call on every employee in the group to work together in order to prevent climate change, realize a sustainable society and conserve the global environment. The Group also issued an Action Plan.

The Action Plan sets specific mid- and long-term numerical targets related to the statement's four environmental visions, "effective use of resources," "reduction of environmental impacts," "improvement in environmental management," and "strengthening cooperation with local communities and the world."

For example, in terms of wind, solar power and other renewable energy, the group hopes to double their use of these energy sources to 726 million kW by 2008 (from 363 million kW in 2002), and to quadruple it to 1,452 million kW by 2010. It also plans to promote nuclear power generation by raising the operating rate of nuclear power plants to 85 percent by 2008, from 69.8 percent in fiscal 2002. In addition, although its annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions increased by 9.7 percent in fiscal 2002 compared to fiscal 1990 levels, it aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 18 percent as of 2008, and by 20 percent as of 2010.

The Action Plan includes other goals such as a introducing environmental management systems to 100 percent of its departments as well as 100 percent green procurement of office supplies. The group also intends to make an international contribution to improving environmental standards in developing countries by implementing CO2 reduction and other projects using its own technologies.
