Keywords: Climate Change Energy Conservation Local government Policy / Systems

As part of its "Eco-School Project," the Wakayama Prefectural Board of Education announced that it will refund prefectural public schools with part of the lighting and heating savings that the schools have ahieved through energy conservation.

Of the amount saved by the schools, 30 percent will be used for planting trees on school premises, and 30 percent will be refunded to the schools to spend at their own discretion. The remaining 40 percent will be pooled for awards to schools that achieve outstanding reductions.

These monetary awards are expected to act as an incentive for schools to reduce their CO2 emissions.
