KDDI Corp., a major telecommunication service provider, on May 30, 2012, announced its new five-year plan, the KDDI Green Plan 2012-2016, which focuses on three priority issues -- "low-carbon society," "recycling-oriented society," and "biodiversity" -- and includes increasing the number of tribrid base stations from 11 to 100 by the end of FY 2012.

KDDI's tribrid base stations use three kinds of electric power - solar power generation, accumulator batteries, and nighttime power supply - to maximize the efficiency of power usage. KDDI has been conducting operation tests for tribrid base stations since 2009 and currently operates 11 tribrid base stations.

Based on previous experiments, the company found that the tribrid base station design reduces commercial power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to conventional stations.
