Panasonic Corp., a major consumer electronics manufacturer of Japan, announced on June 7, 2012 that it would start selling its latest model of photovoltaic modules, the "HIT (Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin-layer) Double," in Japan on August 6. The reverse side of the module is made from glass, thereby allowing electricity to be generated from light hitting either side.

The module's installation angles and heights are designed to be easily adjustable, and power outputs from various installation directions and angles are very similar. Thus, as compared with standard panels, the module has more installation options, such as for "roofing" on cars and bicycle parking lots, "wall paneling" in buildings and fences, and "billboards" on building tops.

The product was initially commercialized in 2006 and has been on sale in Western countries, but this will be the first full-scale launch in the Japanese industrial and public markets.
