Kyoto Hits 10% Reduction Target for Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Fiscal 2009

Keywords: Climate Change Local government Renewable Energy

On August 9, 2011, Kyoto City announced that in fiscal 2009 the city (industry, transportation, household, and commercial sectors) emitted 6.08 million tons of greenhouse gases (GHG), a 1.64-million-ton, or 21.3%, reduction from the 7.72 million tons emitted in the baseline year of 1990, thereby achieving the 10% reduction target set by the Kyoto City Code of Global Warming Countermeasure before its revision.

One key reason for the significant reduction in GHG emissions was a decline in the amount of energy demanded by factories, automobiles, and railways, caused by economic stagnation in the latter half of fiscal 2008. Another contributing factor was an improvement in the emission coefficient for electricity generation.

Kyoto aims to proactively make efforts to shift from life and business styles that consume much energy to eco-friendly ones, and to promote renewable energy.
