Honda Launches Solar Power System Installation Project

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Honda Motor Co. announced on February 4, 2012, that it has installed a 9-kilowatt solar power generating system at the Adachi Odai location of its Honda Cars Tokyo Chuo dealership network in Adachi Ward, Tokyo. This is the first dealership in a series of projects to set up a total capacity of 1 megawatt (MW) with Honda Soltec solar power generating systems at Honda dealerships across Japan by the end of fiscal 2013.

Honda is also planning to install 2.6MW Honda Soltec solar panels at its new Yorii Plant in Saitama Prefecture scheduled to be operational by 2013. This will be the largest solar power generating system at an automobile manufacturing plant in Japan.

Honda Soltec, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., has developed a thin-film solar cell based on CIGS, a compound material made from copper, indium, gallium, and selenium. Honda Soltec's CIGS thin-film solar cells feature an energy-efficient manufacturing process and higher conversion efficiency in diffuse sunlight conditions, such as at sunrise and sunset or during cloudy weather, compared to other crystalline silicon solar cells.

Honda's 1MW solar installation project at its dealerships in Japan is expected to reduce 310 tons of CO2 emissions per year upon its completion.
