It was announced on December 5, 2011, by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), a major shipping company, that it had received a Statement of Compliance for its efforts to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its ships from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) under its Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), a program designed to identify the most effective methods to reduce CO2 emissions from ships.

The SEEMP onboard requirement is adopted by the International Maritime Organization(IMO) and will come into force in January 2013. MOL's achievement this time is ahead of the mandatory requirement.

The program features improved efficiency in identifying the problem and confirmation of the success of ameliorating strategies by introducing a new calculation method, called the "energy efficiency operational indicator" (EEOI), which measures the amount of CO2 emitted, in grams, when one ton of freight is transported one mile. Moreover, through ocean vessel testing, it identified the best trim level where water resistance is minimized, through the use of innovative technology such as employing a weather information system to select the optimum route, etc.

MOL's initiative this time is in line with its environmental target "reduce
CO2 emissions per ton-mile by 10% by fiscal year 2015 compared to the 2009 level."
