Japanese Companies Launch Cloud Services for Power Saving in Summer

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Energy Conservation Manufacturing industry

In the summer of 2011, reductions are required for peak power consumption, as electricity shortages may seriously affect numerous companies. Devising measures required to address this issue remains a serious task for these companies. Several manufacturers have therefore launched new services for energy saving by taking advantage of cloud computing. These services collectively manage and visualize electricity consumption at various business sites in order to enhance employee awareness about electricity consumption and to minimize the impact of reducing total electricity use.

On May 18, 2011, NEC Biglobe, Ltd. launched a similar service named "Biglobe Eco-Bird," which supports the companies' energy-saving efforts as means of visualizing the use of energy, such as electricity, water and gas, via a website. By measuring the energy consumption of each business site and providing a visual representation of energy use, and the gap between the actual value and the target, the service enables users to determine how much energy their companies actually use and how effective their efforts are. This service also helps each employee participate more actively in energy-saving efforts.

Toshiba Corp. and Toshiba Solutions Corp., on May 19, 2011, began marketing its Cloud Service for Visualizing Electricity Use, which makes electricity consumption visible in real time throughout organizations. This cloud service allows visualization of the overall status of electricity consumption by measuring electricity use from one-minute to 30-minute periods at each business site, and processing these data automatically.
