Fifth International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Expo was held at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan, from February 25 through 27, 2009. About 950 companies from Japan and abroad gathered at the expo to exhibit their latest products and technologies related to residential renewable energy. Researchers from many countries made presentations on the most recent results from their studies of hydrogen and fuel cells, and had lively, interactive discussions with the people in attendance.

The visitors were given opportunities to test-ride the latest fuel cell vehicles made by Toyota, Honda and Nissan, etc., to experience their performance. Other new products were also drawing attention, such as a household fuel cell system from Tokyo Gas Co., which enables renewable energy to cover all of the home's energy consumption, and fuel cell systems for mobile phones and small robots running on micro fuel cells by FC-R&D Corp.

With environmental conservation efforts expanding among households globally, in 2009 Japan became the first country in the world to launch sales of residential fuel cell systems. Also, with the nation's subsidy program for solar cell panels encouraging installations, the use of renewable energy is expected to spread among general consumers.
