NEC Conducts Tours to Offset CO2 Emissions

Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry

As part of its activities to raise environmental awareness, NEC Corporation has launched an environmentally friendly tour for its employees and their families. The tour, named the "CO2 Recovery Tour," has participants plant trees that offset the CO2 emissions generated from their travels.

In a tree-planting tour of NEC's Forest in the Kangaroo Island, Australia, conducted in August 2007, about 20 participants planted at least ten trees per person. This allocation was based on the company's calculation that about two tons of CO2 would be generated per person on the tour by using airplanes, other transportation means, and accommodation on the island. NEC expects that the trees planted will lead to a net CO2 reduction of about four tons, about twice the estimated CO2 emissions produced by the tour.

In October 2007, the company carried out another "CO2 Recovery Tour" to Okinawa to clean up the beach. The company calculated that about 180 kilograms per person of CO2 emissions would be generated from the tour. Employees also participated in the tour in agreement with the requirement to plant a tree in NEC's forest in Australia, which would offset about twice the amount of CO2 produced.

NEC has organized the tour to the Kangaroo Island to allow participants to have tree-planting experiences since 2003. The company will continuously implement the tours with the aim of achieving CO2 reduction targets as a concrete global warming countermeasure.
