Honda Releases Thin-film Solar Cells

A new solar cell using a thin film made from copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS) has been developed by Honda. Honda Soltec started mass production at its new plant with an annual capacity of 27.5 megawatts in Autumn 2007, resulting in the expansion of sales throughout Japan.

Honda Soltec Co., a solar cell subsidiary wholly owned by Honda Motor Co., began sales of thin-film solar cells in June 2007. The cells are produced by Honda Engineering Co., and sold primarily in the Kanto area, Japan, through distributors that also provide solar cell installation services.

In 2006, Honda set a global reduction target for CO2 emissions from its products and production processes by 2010. Honda plans to accelerate its efforts against global warming by focusing on energy-generating products, such as cogeneration units and thin-film solar cells.
