Matsushita (Panasonic) Introduces Monthly Environmental Performance Reporting

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., also known by the brand name of Panasonic, announced on June 27, 2007 that the company had published its "Environmental Data Book 2007" reporting on environmental activities in fiscal 2007(started on April 1 in 2006 and ended on March 31 in 2007). The annual report was first published three years ago to cover activities from the viewpoint of environmental management.

In the summary for fiscal 2007, on the topic of environmental governance, the report states that in order to reinforce environmental management and accelerate efforts to reduce CO2 emissions on a group-wide basis, Panasonic started issuing a monthly environmental performance report on a trial basis in October 2006, and started its full implementation in April 2007. Environment-related data are collected from each worksite every month, and then progress and challenges are analyzed and used as feedback to make further improvements.

In addition, aiming to raise its employees' and their families' environmental awareness and to further promote the company's so-called "Love the Earth Citizens' Campaign (LE Campaign)" , Panasonic established the "LE Expert Accreditation System." In fiscal 2007, 11 LE experts have been certified under this system.

The Data Book also states that Panasonic achieved what it calls a "Green Product Development Rate of 96%, which shows a percentage of internally-accredited environmentally-conscious products in the value of total shipments from factories of products developed in the fiscal year. In addition, the company cut CO2 emissions per unit of sales by 24%, surpassing the target of a 6% reduction. Panasonic also reports that it has introduced a new environmental mark called "eco ideas" to represent its willingness to engage in environmental activities.
