NGO Implementing Carbon Offset Project

Keywords: Climate Change Ecosystems / Biodiversity NGO / Citizen

Conservation International (CI) is an international non-governmental organization established to resolve environmental problems, focusing on the relationship between eco-systems and humans. One of its activities is the Conservation Carbon Project, a carbon offset project to conserve the Makira Forest in Madagascar.

Carbon offset is a strategy of investing in forest conservation projects, aiming to offset greenhouse gas emissions produced by various human activities, such as everyday-life activities and product manufacturing. In Japan, Mitsubishi Group offset the greenhouse gas emissions produced by its operations related to the Aichi EXPO 2005, such as construction of the Mitsubishi Pavilion @Earth, and the energy consumed during the EXPO through investing in CI's Makira Forest Conservation Project.

Makira Forest Conservation Area is the largest remaining pristine forest in Madagascar, where forests have been rapidly destroyed. The forest provides habitats for many endangered species, such as black and white ruffed lemurs. In addition to forest conservation, the Makira project also aims to maintain biodiversity and contribute to local communities.
