Sanyo Releases Solar-Powered Battery Charger and Multi-Use Electric Hand Warmer

Keywords: Non-manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

In November 2006, Sanyo Electric Co. of Japan launched sales of a solar-powered battery charger it calls the "eneloop solar charger", which can charge "eneloop" batteries with power generated from the sun. This product was quickly followed by the launch of an "eneloop kairo" rechargeable hand warmer in December. They are the first in a series of "eneloop universe" products from Sanyo, based on the "eneloop" concept that eliminates battery disposal. The first lot of "eneloop kairo" was sold out immediately, amid high acclaim.

The term "eneloop" refers to "energy looping." The "eneloop" rechargeable battery features include the capability to be recharged about 1,000 times, low cost at four yen per charge (about three U.S. cents), and applicability to a wide range of devices, from remote controls for home electronics to digital cameras.

The "eneloop solar charger" has no need for a power outlet as it can be charged entirely with the sun's energy. It has three built-in lithium-ion batteries to store energy from the solar cells. Once these batteries are completely charged, they can quickly recharge one to four AA and AAA-sized "eneloop" batteries.

The "eneloop kairo" is a hand warmer containing an internal lithium-ion rechargeable battery. It can be recharged about 500 times with an adapter connected to an AC outlet. Equipped with a switch, it can be turned on and off when needed. It has two temperature settings: high and low.
