Keywords: Food Non-manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

On July 3, 2006, Lawson Inc., a leading Japanese convenience store chain, concluded an agreement with the Japanese Red Cross Society to promptly provide disaster victims with their daily needs in the event of a natural disaster.

With regard to the conveyance of relief supplies, the Red Cross is in partnership with Japan's leading transportation companies, including Sagawa Express Co., Nippon Express Co., and Yamato Transport Co. The costs of aid procurement and transportation will be borne by the Red Cross.

In order to promote its aid activities during large-scale disasters, as of the end of March 2006, Lawson has concluded agreements with 25 local municipalities and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency to send aid supplies to victims and to support those who have difficulties in returning home. Under the agreement to support such people, Lawson will cooperate in letting them use bathroom facilities during disasters when they may not have access to transportation, forcing them to travel on foot.
