NEC to Issue Quarterly Environmental Activity Report

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

NEC Corp. of Japan will increase the frequency of its Environment Activity Reports from once to four times a year, the company said on November 29 when it released its report for the first half of fiscal 2005 (April-September) as a first step towards more frequent reporting.

Through the timely provision of information, NEC hopes to enhance communication with its stakeholders and incorporate lessons learned in its activities. For fiscal 2006, the company will issue its environmental report for the first quarter in August, for the first half year in November, and for the third quarter in February 2007. The Annual Environmental Activity Report for the entire fiscal year 2006 will be published in June 2007.

Although NEC's consolidated net sales for the first half of fiscal 2005 declined by 2 percent from the same period in the previous year, it achieved an 8 percent reduction in energy-derived carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per unit of net sales by reducing CO2 emissions by 60,000 tons, or 10 percent, on a year-on-year basis. Emissions of greenhouse gases other than CO2 also decreased by 30,000 tons, a 6 percent reduction.

Significant initiatives during this period included development of a kenaf fiber-reinforced bioplastic for mobile phones, the launch of an afforestation project as part of its refurbished personal computer business, and participation of the NEC Group in "Team Minus 6 Percent," a national campaign to combat global warming.
