Kyoto City Establishes Certification System for "Eco-driving Promoters"

Keywords: Climate Change Local government Policy / Systems Transportation / Mobility

Kyoto City announced on November 24, 2004 that it has established a system to certify "eco-driving promoters" jointly with the Machinaka (Inner-city) Green Delivery Association in Kyoto City. The aim is to promote eco-friendly driving practices such as driving at economic speeds and eliminating unnecessary idling.

The system certifies staff members of businesses participating in the Association who are willing to promote eco-driving. These eco-driving promoters work to raise awareness and provide guidance on eco-driving at their offices, and make an annual report on their achievements to Kyoto City.

Applicants must attend the Association's eco-driving training program, which includes a practical driving test. They must then take the initiative to promote eco-driving in the workplace. Kyoto City plans to expand its efforts to include bus companies starting in fiscal 2005.

The Machinaka Green Delivery Promotion Association was established in January 2004 by Kyoto City, and 2,200 businesses are presently members. Aiming to improve air quality in the city, members promote green delivery by implementing eco-driving and using low-emission vehicles. The Association believes that this contributes to curbing global warming as well as improving automobile-related environmental problems in the city.
