Thirteen Transport Organizations Achieve Global Warming Targets

On January 19, 2005, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport released its fourth follow-up report on targets and the progress of a voluntary plan drawn up by the transport industry to curb global warming.

The plan was compiled in March 1998 by 26 transport organizations under the then Ministry of Transport to promote environmental initiatives in the transport sector as part of the nation's efforts to steadily enforce the Kyoto Protocol by setting specific targets, including targets relating to global warming measures.

As of September 2004, 13 out of the 28 organizations involved in the plan achieved the numerical targets. Eleven organizations attained 50 percent or more of the targets, and the remaining four organizations achieved less than 50 percent. Comparing these with last year's figures, the Ministry concluded that these organizations are making steady progress. In the previous year, only 8 of 27 participating organizations cleared the targets, with 13 others attaining more than 50 percent and the remaining 6 falling short of the 50 percent lines.

Twenty-two of the organizations took the opportunity to introduce various environmental protection initiatives illustrating specific features of the industry, including global warming measures,
