Logistics Reform Helps Oki Electric Cut CO2 Emissions by 1,050 Tons

Oki Electric Industrial Co. of Japan and the companies in its group are promoting a modal shift from truck transportation to rail transportation to reduce environmental impacts from their distribution operations. The group has already made the shift in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu, areas which are distant from production sites in the Kanto region (including Tokyo). The routes subject to the modal shift accounted for 705,000 kilometers of travel per year, meaning a reduction of 550 tons of CO2 emissions in fiscal 2003.

As it globalizes production and sales, the Oki Group has also reformed supply chain management in its semiconductor division, as the majority of semiconductor production takes place overseas. As a result, the group has succeeded in reducing 500 tons of CO2 emissions in fiscal 2003, as well as drastically reducing logistics costs and delivery time.

The Oki Group established its environmental protection program in 1993 and has been actively promoting it ever since. The program was expanded beyond the scope of the group's production sites starting in fiscal 2003. This initiative resulted in ISO 14001 certification for the group's logistics service company, Oki Logistics Co., on March 31, 2004.
