Prefecture Seeking Ideas and People to Fight Global Warming

Keywords: Climate Change Local government Policy / Systems Renewable Energy

Nagano Prefecture in Japan has formulated a prefectural Plan to Reduce Global Warming, with the aim of reducing the prefecture's greenhouse gas emissions six percent by 2010 and 50 percent by 2050 from 1990 levels, in order to move toward a society that does not cause global warming. To accomplish this, the prefecture is now seeking constructive ideas and people in six areas.

Nagano is seeking, for example, companies to propose and apply global warming prevention technologies for prefectural facilities, and organizations that will promote global warming prevention measures utilizing local features of the prefecture. It is also seeking plans to build solar power systems on prefectural buildings, as well as suggestions for the details of an ordinance on global warming to be established in the future.

Located in a mountainous area in central Japan, Nagano boasts rich forest resources and long sunshine hours, giving it abundant renewable energy resources such as wood biomass, solar, hydro power, and the cooling function of snow and ice. The prefecture aims to invite various locally-oriented ideas and to nurture and support the initiatives of local residents and entrepreneurs.
