Environmental Counselors in Japan Pass the 3,000 Mark

Keywords: Government Policy / Systems

After Japan's Ministry of the Environment (MOE) created registration system in 1996 by which applicants can register as "environmental counselors," after passing a screening process, the registered number of environmental counselors recently exceeded 3,000. The counselors have rich experience and expertise in fields relating to environmental preservation, and give a variety of advice to citizens, non-governmental organizations and businesses to support their green activities.

The MOE makes a list of environmental counselors, and makes the list available on the website of the MOE, providing the counselors' contact information and specialties to those who are involved in green activities. The list has two categories: business sector for counseling to businesses, and public sector to citizens and citizens' groups.

The registered counselors are now 3,097 in total: 1,994 in business sector and 1,285 in civil sector. Of all the counselors, 182 are registered in both sectors. They contribute to promote environmental conservation activities at a community level. The MOE aims to improve the environmental counselor system to function more effectively, by establishing a committee to review the ongoing registration system and future role of environmental counselors.
