NEC to Expand Green Procurement to Software and Service Suppliers

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

NEC Corporation plans to apply its Green Procurement Guidelines to outsourcers of software and services starting in fiscal 2003. It already began applying these Guidelines to manufacturers of parts and materials in autumn last year. This new move aims at expanding their scope to achieve NEC's goal of "100 percent green procurement by March 2006."

In this process, NEC places the greatest importance on the attitude of software and service suppliers toward environmental management, based on the idea that companies active in environmental management can provide environmentally friendly software or services. As an indispensable prerequisite, suppliers must have their own environmental management system, while possession of ISO 14001 or other third-party certification is also deemed desirable.

In addition, outsourcers are classified into four levels, A, B, C, and D, according to their involvement in environmental activities such as global environmental protection, green procurement, and information disclosure. Companies with higher ratings will enjoy higher priority in doing business with NEC.

NEC has drawn up detailed Green Procurement Guidelines for its business partners. The company hopes that these Guidelines will help its partners enhance their environmental consciousness, resulting in earlier achievement of its goal of 100 percent green procurement.
