"Harmony with the Earth" 24-hour Music Broadcasting by Green Power

Keywords: Non-manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Beginning on April 1, 2003, a music channel in Japan known as Viewsic (operated by SME TV Inc.) that transmits via communications satellite will start to put all of its programs on the air using green power.

This is an unprecedented attempt in Japan to power round-the-clock broadcasting with wind power. Provided through a system called "Green Power Certificate System," the power comes indirectly from the Tashirodaira Wind Power Station in Akita Prefecture. SME TV has obtained a "Green Power Certificate" issued by the Japan Natural Energy Company for the 0.7 million kWh of wind-generated power it plans to purchase under contract annually.

Viewsic provides easy-listening music entertainment programming to approximately 3.4 million households, from music lovers to general viewers, through SkyPerfecTV! and cable television stations across the country.

This attempt to use green power is an example of actions being taken by media to support a trend toward environmental protection that is gradually spreading in the music industry and offers an opportunity to raise environmental issues to a larger public as something relevant to their daily lives. SME TV also started a series on the environment on March 8, 2003. In upcoming shows, the station plans to introduce wind power and other environmental topics.
