Canon Introduces Company-wide Environmental Performance Assessment System

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

Canon Inc. has been promoting environmental management based on four central pillars: "Canon Global Environment Promotion Organization," "New Mid-Term Environmental Goals," "Optimizing Environmental Investment" and "Environmental Performance Assessment System."

The Environmental Performance Assessment System was designed to reflect the environmental performance of each division. Started in 2001, it was applied first to the operations and production divisions and has just been expanded to cover marketing subsidiaries. The items covered in assessments of marketing subsidiaries include whether or not environmental management systems have been introduced, recovery and recycling of products after use, and more.

With this recent expansion, the entire company and all its divisions are now covered by the system. Each Canon Group company evaluates its own environmental efforts, and the president then announces all results at a top management meeting every six months. The achievement levels of environmental measures are then incorporated into evaluations of division performance.
