Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. agreed to jointly develop performance indexes and technologies to promote environmental management. The two companies will work together to create common environmental performance indicators, develop environmental protection technologies, and promote environmental education.

Specific indicators will be defined by the end of fiscal 2002 to measure the environmental aspects of products, total material resource input volumes, and transportation logistics. The joint technical work will focus on research and development of substitutes for toxic substances that are expected to be regulated in the future (hexavalent chromium, lead, mercury, cadmium, and specific brominated flame retardants). These substances are found in products manufactured by both companies. Moreover, they will develop and share environmental education deliverables for employees and their families, and for consumers.
