JWA Website Forecasts Household CO2 Emissions

Keywords: Climate Change Government Policy / Systems University / Research institute

The Japan Weather Association (JWA) has developed a system to forecast carbon dioxide emissions coming from households and made it available to the Japanese public on a web site since mid-June, 2002

Sensible temperature derived from meteorological data such as air temperature, humidity, and wind velocity has a strong correlation with consumption of electricity, gas, and kerosene at home. By obtaining the correlation index between sensible temperature and carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from household consumption, the carbon dioxide emissions are approximated from the JWA's weather forecast. High or low emissions will be forecasted by comparing the emissions of the same time period over the past ten years. The forecast will be updated three times a day.

Besides the carbon dioxide emission forecast, the homepage provides tips on how to minimize carbon dioxide emissions by wise use of air conditioning equipment.
