Two major Japanese companies, Kao Corporation and Fujitsu Limited, were included in September 2015 in the annual Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), one of the major global indices for socially responsible investment (SRI). Kao is a major manufacturer providing household products such as cosmetics and detergents for consumers, and Fujitsu is a major information technology equipment and services provider.

Kao and Fujitsu earned the highest marks in the Household & Personal Products Industry Group and in the Software & Services Group, respectively, and were also selected as Industry Group Leaders.

DJSI World is the indices jointly operated by the S&P Dow Jones of the U.S. and RobecoSAM of Switzerland, selecting the world's leading companies in accordance with sustainability criteria under economic, environmental, and social categories. The assessment is made every year, targeting about 2,500 listed companies worldwide in 59 industries, and the top 10 percent companies are included in the DJSI World. The fiscal 2015 assessment selected 317 companies, including 20 Japanese companies. Under the scheme, an Industry Leader is selected for each of 59 industries, and an Industry Group Leader is selected for each of 24 industry groups covering the 59 industries.

Kao was highly valued for its initiatives with economic activities, including innovative strategies to produce high value-added new products, and supply chain management; its environmental activities including technology development for containers and packaging under the 4Rs (Reduce, Renewable, Reuse, and Recycle) viewpoints, as well as efforts to reduce environmental impacts through life cycle assessment; and social activities including recruitment of capable employees and corporate citizenship.

Fujitsu was also rated high for its initiatives with economic activities, including brand management and risk management; environmental activities, including practices of environment management systems and continued efforts to reduce environmental impacts; and social activities, including corporate citizenship and personnel development.
