Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry

Unicharm Corp., a major Japanese manufacturer of hygiene products, conducted a campaign to support reconstruction efforts in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake from January 16 through March 15, 2012, jointly with Tsuruha Holdings, which owns drugstores through an affiliated company. The campaign uses domestic carbon credits to raise fund, the first initiative of its kind in Japan, and is scheduled to be carried out

Following the Domestic Credit Utilization Scheme for Supporting Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake designed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Unicharm purchases carbon credits created by Tsuruha with some of the sales profits of Unicharm's products. Tsuruha then contributes part of money raised to help rebuild disaster-affected areas.

The Domestic Credit System is a system to certify reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as carbon credits. Under this system, Japan's Domestic Credit Certification Committee certifies the reductions attained by small-and medium-scale enterprises through their efforts in introducing energy-saving equipment. Credit utilizing companies purchase domestic credits to achieve their voluntary action plan targets, as well as to use for corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and carbon offset programs to contribute to global warming prevention and local revitalization.
