Suntory Holdings Ltd. has the best environmental brand image in Japan, followed by Toyota Motors Corp., Aeon Co. and Panasonic Corp., according to the results of the 2011 Environmental Brand Survey released on September 6, 2011, by Nikkei Business Publications, Inc. As a general trend, companies whose social activities in the quake-hit area were highly visible enhanced their image while electric power companies and transportation equipment/electrical machinery manufacturers were evaluated lower than before.

Suntory, a major beverage manufacturer, was highly evaluated for its continuous efforts to conserve water-source forests and to recycle natural resources. The company is spreading an environment-friendly and social-contributing image through TV commercials and its products. It is also providing information on its website where visitors can easily learn about green efforts by playing games and answering quiz questions.

Toyota Motors remained in second place, the same as in the last survey, due to the diminishing effect of its hybrid vehicle, Prius. Aeon, a major retailer and distributor, jumped from ninth to third place. This is the result of ongoing environmental activities, marketing eco products, reducing plastic shopping bag use, planting trees in its parking lot spaces, and recycling activities at its shops. Panasonic fell to fourth place, after coming in first in the previous year's survey.

The survey is conducted through the Internet, calculated and analyzed by Nikkei BP Eco Management Forum every year to investigate consumers' awareness about the environmental efforts of 560 major companies. This 12th survey was conducted from May 23 through June 22, 2011, with valid responses from 22,294 people.
