Japanese Trading Company Develops Eco-Conscious Condo

Marubeni Corp., a major trading company in Japan, announced on July 5, 2011, the launch of its "Grand Suite Seta" condominium in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. The condominium is the company's first project to employ its Marubeni Ecological Life Support System (MELSS).

With MELSS, Marubeni hopes to propose a new concept in which living in a condominium is in itself ecologically friendly, taking Modern, Economical, Livable, Sustainable and Secure as its five keywords. By introducing a practical level of electricity and energy efficiency--an issue of major importance in Japanese society today--into residents' daily lives, the company aims to supports environmentally conscious lifestyles that contribute to the utilization of renewable energies.

Grand Suite SETA features eco-friendly systems including solar panels, an electric car sharing system, and an indoor garden using chemical-free soils. The company is planning to apply the MELSS system to all condominiums in the Grand Suite series. Also to be introduced are water-saving toilets, power-saving outlets to cut standby electricity, a water heater remote controller for checking household electricity and gas charges for each unit, and light-emitting diode (LED) lights for common spaces. The company is also considering incorporating other renewable energy features to its condominiums.
